IN THE SMALL MOMENTS, I SHINE
This portrait of my cousin's son (my cousinette as I call my cousin's kids) revealed to me how good I am at procrastinating when I don't feel confident in my abilities. I began by completing the intricate portrait portion, then wasn't sure the next move to make on it. I realized I was afraid to add anything for fear of messing it up. This fear was preventing me from boldly doing what I know I needed to do- flood the whole page in a wash of energized color to echo the energy of the figure. This wash added exactly what I was hoping for, better than I could have anticipated. I am so excited to have taken this final jump to bring the piece to completion!
Meet my cousinette. My family is full of men who love to love, and love to laugh. Always making silly faces in pictures at the last minute which you don't see until after the picture is taken, and which never fail to crack us up. In this piece, my little cousin reflects the joy my family cultivates in little ways through a silly and enthusiastic smile. The vibrant colors in my portraits are meant to show the energy we shine and share with the world. When he saw the painting, he said 'the gold made him feel like he had a crown'. This is what I hope for with my work- that it reflects how we shine even in the smallest moments.
